Tragedy Strikes: Two Fires and a Heartbreaking Loss
Despite their unwavering dedication, tragedy struck in March of this year when a devastating fire consumed their thatched cottage. The fire unfolded in two stages, leaving the couple devastated but fortunate to escape unharmed. The first fire saw firefighters rushing to fill the chimney with foam and coat the roof with fire retardant in a valiant effort to save the cherished dwelling.
However, the following day, a smoldering ember ignited a second blaze, leading to significant damage. The cottage’s timber structure was reduced to ashes, leaving only a central beam exposed and part of the wall structure standing. While the loss was heart-wrenching, it provided Jeremy with a unique opportunity to document the original construction of the house—a structure with a chimney dating back at least three centuries.
Rebuilding with Tradition and Community Spirit
Determined to breathe new life into their home, Jeremy began contemplating the possibility of rebuilding it using traditional Irish construction methods and materials. He envisioned resurrecting the thatched roof and honoring the legacy of the house. The new cottage incorporates modern amenities while preserving its traditional charm. The renovation began with the removal of a large gas tank, replaced by a log stove with a back boiler to heat the radiators. Slim electric panels, individually controlled via a remote app, supplement heating, providing greater efficiency and control.
To ensure a fresh atmosphere and minimise heat loss, a heat recovery ventilation system was installed. The construction embraced modern techniques, such as a cavity wall structure filled with EPS beads, to enhance insulation and energy efficiency.

Everyone from tradespeople to local businesses offered their time, skills, and materials to help rebuild Jeremy and Melanie’s home.
