Can you extend without planning permission in Ireland?

Q: Is it mandatory for a planning-permission-exempt extension to adhere to the original aesthetic of the home?

A: In Northern Ireland (NI), regulatory guidance stipulates that, with exempt developments, the exterior materials— barring those used for a conservatory—should visually complement the existing house, hinting at a preference to maintain the original style. However, in the Republic of Ireland, if your extension doesn’t need planning permission, it doesn’t have to use the same materials. The only time it does is when you’re building sheds or garages next to your house.
